THE MONTAUK STANDARD
Photo by Peter Fisher · Brandon Sausele, Montauk
Founded in honor of Brandon Sausele, Stony Brook alumnus and Montauk SurfMaster champion. The Montauk Standard is awarded each year to the member who best embodies the spirit of Montauk surfcasting. The award itself is a Silver Van Staal VSX2-200, held in custody for the season and passed forward. The Standard isn't won on a single fish. It's awarded by the Selection Committee, composed of the Club's Executive Board and Brandon Sausele himself, to a member who has shown consistent presence, documented time in the surf, meaningful contribution to the Club, and the discipline the sport demands. Recipients must attend at least 70% of meetings, complete a minimum of five documented surfcasting outings, and remain in good standing with both the Club and the University. The reel remains property of the Club. Each year's recipient serves as its custodian, charged with carrying the Standard forward.
