Stony Brook University Fishing Club
The Fishing Club at Stony Brook University unites students through a shared passion for fishing, connecting recreational experiences with marine science, conservation, and coastal community.
Who We Are
Located on Long Island, in proximity to the Surfcasting capital of the world, and perhaps even the sportfishing capital of the World, Stony Brook is at the epicenter of the East Coast Fishing community. As such, we are in a unique position to foster interconnectedness among Long Island fishermen and Stony Brook students. There is no better way to do so than to create the Fishing Club at Stony Brook University. The fishing club would not just be a plain-old fishing club, but would also connect the rich research culture here at Stony Brook. With this dual-pronged approach, we will not only foster a love of fishing at Stonybrook but also provide students with exposure to the research opportunities on campus. Under the guidance of Stony Brook Research Technician Doctor Fogg, we will conduct research ranging from fish tagging, behavioral analysis, to environmental trends. This will allow students not only to catch elusive species on Long Island but also to develop a love for research in a fun, low-stress environment. With the founders' deep connections to elite surfcasters, tuna captains, and commercial fishermen, we will host informative seminars educating students and the broader Long Island community about the vast fishing opportunities on Long Island. Through sponsorships, fundraisers, and other endeavors, we will be able to provide fishing equipment for students who cannot afford it, or those intimidated by the high entry cost to the sport. This is truly an exciting opportunity that addresses a deficit on campus, and we will work to unite the student body.
